 Al Jazeera in English – is the state-owned Arabic-language international radio broadcaster of Qatar. It is based in Doha and operated by the media conglomerate Al Jazeera Media Network. The flagship of the network, its station identification, is Al Jazeera. The patent holding is a “private foundation for public benefit” under Qatari law. Al Jazeera launched an English language channel, originally called Al Jazeera International, in 2006. The new English language venture faced considerable regulatory and commercial hurdles in the North America market for its perceived sympathy with extremist causes. At the same time, others felt Al Jazeera’s competitive advantage lay in programming in the Arabic language. Al Jazeera insists that it covers all sides of the debate and claims to represent the views of Israel and Iran with equal objectivity. Al Jazeera was the only channel that provided live coverage of the war in Afghanistan.
